    Description

I am listing a large collection of these one of a kind Hand Carved Wooden “KACHINA STYLE” Plaques,
each one is 10” to 12” tall and approximately 1/2” thick, each initialed P.S by the artist and dated by the year on the back. These are each cut out , hand embossed,  and painted to show the specifics of each of the historical Hopi kachinas shown.  Each hopi style  “Kachina” carved plaque “ was researched and is based on illustrations from two particular books plus (see photographs ) plus the historical knowledge that the lady who made them  had been raised with.
This project project was a labor of love . I bought them  a few years ago at an estate auction with information verbally provided by the family.  The woman , Patricia Steven’s who made them was the step mother, I was told she was half Hopi.  They said started these in her 70s as a way to pass time and be creative with her love of arts and crafts and to honor the heritage she felt denied as a non full blooded native and half white. Because she was neither a registered artist nor full blood Native American these are only allowed to be sold as “Hopi Style”.
There are approximately 44 different plaques in the the whole collection, only one of each. This labor of love was a part time hobby and took over 4 years to complete (between 1994 & 1998). I also have some photos and pages from workbooks she used as reference to accurately design sketch the patterns for the wood cuts. After each one was meticulously drawn out every color was listed like almost a paint by number, (you can see that in the sketches ) so she could paint each one accurately.    Before the wood cuts were painted the patterns were engraved or embossed into each piece. If you look at some of the most detailed ones, you will see the cutouts are precise  and even in the smallest places and internal cuts are accurately cut. You could not begin to make one of these with the time, skill and materials considered for the price. I have seen other “kachina style”  Wall Plaques listed  for well over 0 not even beginning to have the amount of detail and precision that these have. Of course I’m not referencing actual hundred percent registered Native American Hopi art when I say that. I’m just talking about crafts And figurines and replicas .  These are beautiful items, they were not mass produced. There was only one of each other ever made. I think they make a stunning homage and historical reference to the 3 dimensional kachinas that were made by true full blooded Hopi indigenous people. It would be nice to own them all . Wouldn’t it a great educational display ! Perfect for a museum to show the highlights of each different character . I’m going to be listing a few every night. if you’re interested in five or more, please let me know. We can work out a discount. I’m always willing to listen and consider..
I have listed 43 different of these one of a kind artisan items, they are a one time offering.
Don’t miss out on your favorite one.
